Emma was born in Fairy Tale Land just as The Dark Curse was unleashed. Her parents, Prince Charming and Snow White, put her in an enchanted wardrobe that brought her to our world outside of the curse. Her only possession from them is a handmade baby blanket with her name on it. She grew up in the foster system and has no idea of her fairytale past. Once she aged out of the system, she was in and out of trouble. She fell in love with another thief, but he left her convinced it was for her own good. He leaves their car, the yellow bug, and a substantial amount of money for her as well. Emma bounces around but finally settles on a career as a bailbondsperson. On her 28th birthday, the son she gave up for adoption at his birth ten years ago, Henry, shows up at her doorstep telling her she has to return home with him to be the Savior of Fairy Tale Land. Emma doesn't believe him but se does take him home. On her way out of Storybrooke, she wrecks her car trying to avoid hitting a wolf. After talking to Henry more and observing and asking questions about his relationship with his adopted mother, Regina, she decides to stay in Storybrooke.
This decision and every decision Emma makes that keeps her in Storybrooke weakens the curse. Emma slowly meets the inhabitants of this eccentric town and learns their stories bit by bit, being informed by Henry which fairytale character they actually are. Emma refuses to believe Henry and at times this puts a strain on their ever growing relationship. Emma and Regina continually clash, sometimes physically, over Henry. They also clash over Graham, the handsome sheriff and Regina's boy-toy. As a last resort to keep Emma from breaking her curse, Regina tries to poison her with the same apple she used on Snow White. The plan backfires when it is Henry, trying to convince Emma the stories are real, who eats the poison. Henry appears to die at the hospital, but when Emma kisses his forehead goodbye, he suddenly wakes up and the curse is broken. Emma finally believes. She is standing next to Henry in the hospital as they watch a purple cloud descend upon Storybrooke.
In the aftermath of breaking the curse, Emma is having a hard time accepting her parents. She is hurt and angry, and decides to target it all on Mr. Gold who tricked her into retrieving the True Love Potion from the belly of the beast She also makes a promise to Henry not to let anyone kill Regina. While helping save Regina, she and Snow White (Mary Margaret) are pulled into the hat and end up in what's left of FTL. Emma and Snow search, along with Mulan and Aurora, for a way back to Storybrooke, all the while watching out for the evil Cora and wiley Captain Hook.
