Gepetto and his wife could not have a child of their own so Gepetto made a wooden boy puppet. Eventually the Blue Fairy turns this puppet into a real boy on the condition that he always be good. Pinocchio is seven years old (not necessarily a real boy for all seven years) when the curse strikes. When the Blue Fairy asks Gepetto to carve a wardrobe from an enchanted tree to save Snow White's and Charming's baby daughter, Emma, he agrees on the condition that Pinocchio gets to be one of the two people that can be saved by the wardrobe. A few minutes before the curse strikes, Gepetto secretly sends Pinocchio through making him promise to look after Emma and to tell her who she is. The boy is followed shortly by the crying newborn. It will be reported that a seven year old boy found Emma on the side of a highway - Pinocchio is this boy. He and Emma are put in the foster system together, but he is miserable. After saying goodbye to baby Emma, he runs away with a group of boys.
He makes his way to Storybrooke not long after Emma becomes sheriff. He arrives on a motorcycle with a typewriter and is genial and enigmatic. Taking an interest in Henry's book. He steals the book and adds pages to it. He also tries to befriend Emma, but she is skeptical of him. Eventually she agrees to a date and he takes her to the wishing well, where he tries to convince that Henry's book is real. He also reveals that he is slowly turning back into wood because he broke his promise to always look after her. He is trying to make up for it by convincing her now, but she refuses to believe. He decides to spend his last days with Marco (Gepetto) even though Marco has no idea who he is. He finally becomes completely wooden in his room at Granny's Bed & Breakfast. This is how remains even after the curse is broken. Once Mr. Gold brings magic to Storybrooke, he is able to move as a real person, but is still wooden.
